The Tuckahoe Quarry opened in 1818 and became a worldwide supplier of high quality marble. Marble from Tuckahoe was used to construct many famous monuments, including New York City Hall, the Washington Post Office, and the Memorial Arch in New York.
St. Patrick's Cathedral, the New York Public Library, and the bottom portion of the Washington Monument used Tuckahoe marble. The Inwood Formation near the Bronx River was used for markers in cemeteries from the 1800's into the early 20th century. Unfortunately the Tuckahoe quarry closed around 1930.
Tuckahoe has acquired new investors which provided the capital to redevelop many of its industrial and commercial areas. Projects now include converting the Revlon factory into an Apartment Complex, the new construction of retail, medical offices, and residential properties along Main Street.
Two gas stations were refurbished, and updated. The Tuckahoe Train Station (with it's new Starbucks), was beautifully restored. Additional construction at the industrial site of Westcon is creating new residental property.
